Lesotho is a small, mountainous country in Southern Africa, officially the Kingdom of Lesotho, and completely surrounded by South Africa. Often called “the Mountain Kingdom,” it sits entirely above 1,000 meters in elevation and has around 2.1–2.3 million people, with Maseru as its capital.
Lesotho is unique as the world’s only country lying entirely above 1,000 m; its lowest point (about 1,400 m) is the highest “lowest point” of any nation. Much of the territory consists of high plateaus and the Maloti Mountains, including Thabana Ntlenyana (3,482 m), Southern Africa’s highest peak.
The climate is temperate: summers are warm and rainy, while winters are cold and dry, with frequent frost and occasional snow in the highlands. Soil erosion and limited arable land (roughly 10–12%) are major environmental concerns.
Hotels in Lesotho
Katse Dam
Katse Dam is a large concrete arch dam located in the Malibamat’so River valley in the Thaba-Tseka District of Lesotho. It is the centerpiece of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, one of Africa’s most ambitious water infrastructure undertakings, supplying water to South Africa and generating hydropower for Lesotho. Katse Dam’s double-curvature concrete arch design allows it to efficiently contain immense water pressure in a narrow mountain gorge. Constructed between 1991 and 1996, the project involved extensive tunneling and engineering innovations to operate at high altitudes and in steep terrain. The structure’s durability and scale make it one of the most advanced dams in Africa.
Sehlabathebe National Park
Sehlabathebe National Park is a protected mountain wilderness in southeastern Lesotho, within the Maloti-Drakensberg Park. Established in 1970, it preserves Lesotho’s oldest national park and showcases the country’s dramatic alpine landscapes, endemic flora, and cultural heritage. Sehlabathebe contains rock shelters with ancient San (Bushman) rock art, providing evidence of early human occupation in Lesotho’s highlands. These paintings depict hunting scenes and spiritual motifs, linking the park to broader southern African cultural traditions protected under the shared Lesotho–South Africa heritage landscape.
Maletsunyane Falls
Maletsunyane Falls is a dramatic plunge waterfall in central Lesotho, near the mountain town of Semonkong. Dropping about 192 meters (630 feet) from a basalt ledge, it is among Africa’s highest single-drop waterfalls and a symbol of Lesotho’s rugged highland landscape.
Basotho pony trekking
Basotho pony trekking is an adventure tourism activity in Lesotho that uses the hardy Basotho pony to traverse the country’s rugged mountain terrain. It is one of the best ways for visitors to reach remote highland villages, waterfalls, and scenic passes that are inaccessible by vehicle.
Scenic mountain drives & high passes
Lesotho is a mountainous, landlocked country in southern Africa completely surrounded by South Africa. Officially the Kingdom of Lesotho, it is known as the “Mountain Kingdom” or “Kingdom in the Sky” because all its territory lies above 1,000 meters (3,281 feet). The nation combines rich Sotho cultural traditions with a mAbout two-thirds of Lesotho is mountainous, dominated by the Maloti and Drakensberg ranges. The highest point, Mount Ntlenyana, reaches 3,482 m. Rivers such as the Orange and Tugela originate here, supporting the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, which supplies water and hydroelectric power to both Lesotho and South Africa. The high elevation gives the country a temperate climate with cold winters and summer rainfall.
