Andorra is a small, landlocked country located in the eastern Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain. Despite being one of the smallest countries in Europe, Andorra is renowned for its stunning mountain scenery, thriving tourism industry, and high standard of living. Covering an area of only about 468 square kilometers, it has a population of approximately 85,000 people.
The capital city is Andorra la Vella, which is also the highest capital city in Europe, sitting at an elevation of over 1,000 meters above sea level. The city serves as the country’s political, commercial, and cultural center. Other notable towns include Escaldes-Engordany, famous for its thermal spas, and Encamp, which is well known for winter sports and outdoor activities.
Andorra’s geography is dominated by mountains, valleys, and rivers. The country has more than sixty mountain peaks rising above 2,000 meters, making it a paradise for hikers, skiers, and nature lovers. During winter, ski resorts such as Grandvalira attract thousands of visitors from across Europe. In summer, tourists enjoy hiking trails, cycling routes, and breathtaking landscapes.
The official language of Andorra is Catalan, although Spanish, French, and Portuguese are also widely spoken due to the country’s multicultural population and its close ties with neighboring countries. The majority of residents are Roman Catholics, and many traditional festivals and celebrations reflect the country’s religious and cultural heritage.
Andorra has a unique political system. It is a parliamentary co-principality, meaning it has two heads of state. One is the President of France, and the other is the Bishop of Urgell in Spain. This arrangement dates back to the 13th century and is one of the oldest political systems in Europe. The country’s parliament, known as the General Council of Andorra, is responsible for making laws and governing the country.
The economy of Andorra relies heavily on tourism, which accounts for a significant portion of its income. Millions of visitors come each year to enjoy skiing, shopping, and mountain tourism. The country is also known for its banking and financial services sectors, although it has introduced reforms in recent years to increase transparency and align with international standards. Due to low taxes, Andorra has long been an attractive destination for shoppers and businesses.
Education and healthcare standards in Andorra are among the highest in Europe. The country enjoys one of the world’s highest life expectancies and maintains a very low crime rate. Residents benefit from modern infrastructure and a strong social welfare system.
Although small in size, Andorra has established a strong identity built on its natural beauty, political stability, and economic prosperity. Its blend of medieval traditions and modern living, combined with spectacular mountain landscapes, makes Andorra one of Europe’s most distinctive and charming countries.
