Tonlé Sap Lake

Tonlé Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, located in the heart of Cambodia about 15 km south of Siem Reap. This dynamic ecosystem is vital to the nation’s ecology, economy, and culture, supporting millions of people and serving as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Tonlé Sap’s most remarkable feature is its seasonal flow reversal. During the monsoon (May–October), the Mekong River backs into the Tonlé Sap River, swelling the lake to six times its dry-season size and flooding vast forests and plains. In the dry months (November–April), the flow reverses again, draining the lake back toward the Mekong. This annual “pulse” brings nutrient-rich sediments that sustain Cambodia’s fertile floodplains.

Silver Pagoda

The Silver Pagoda, officially Wat Preah Keo Morakot (“Temple of the Emerald Buddha”), is a royal Buddhist temple within the Royal Palace, Phnom Penh complex in Cambodia. Renowned for its silver-tiled floor and dazzling treasures, it remains one of Phnom Penh’s most important religious and cultural landmarks. Originally built of wood in 1892 during the reign of King Norodom, the pagoda was reconstructed in 1962 with reinforced concrete and Italian marble while retaining its classical Khmer design. The name “Silver Pagoda” derives from the more than 5 tons of silver tiles covering its floor. The temple’s architecture blends Khmer and Thai motifs, featuring tiered roofs, ornate carvings, and murals depicting scenes from the Reamker, Cambodia’s version of the Ramayana.

Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is a monumental 12th-century temple complex in Siem Reap, Cambodia, originally built as a Hindu shrine dedicated to Vishnu. It later became a center of Buddhist worship and is considered the world’s largest religious monument, symbolizing Cambodia’s national identity and architectural achievement. Angkor Wat was constructed during the Khmer Empire’s height under Suryavarman II. Its vast scale and intricate artistry were designed to express both cosmic order and royal authority. After the fall of Angkor in the 15th century, the temple remained in use by Buddhist monks, preserving it as a living place of worship.

Siem Reap

Siem Reap is a city in northwestern Cambodia and the gateway to the ancient temple complex of Angkor Archaeological Park. It serves as one of the country’s primary tourist destinations, blending a vibrant hospitality scene with centuries of Khmer cultural heritage. The area around Siem Reap flourished as the seat of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to 15th centuries. Angkor’s temples, including Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple, and Ta Prohm, testify to the empire’s sophistication in architecture, art, and hydraulic engineering. The city’s modern resurgence began in the late 20th century with Cambodia’s re-opening to international visitors.
