Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia, bordered by China to the north and India to the south, east, and west. It is known for its dramatic Himalayan landscapes including Mount Everest and rich cultural heritage blending Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Nepal’s natural and spiritual significance make it a key destination for trekkers and pilgrims worldwide. Nepal’s terrain rises from the flat Terai plains in the south to the world’s highest peaks in the north. Eight of the planet’s 14 tallest mountains lie within its borders. This altitudinal range creates exceptional biodiversity, from subtropical forests to alpine tundra. Major rivers like the Koshi and Gandaki support agriculture and hydropower.

The modern Nepali state emerged in the 18th century under King Prithvi Narayan Shah’s unification campaigns. Following centuries of monarchy, Nepal transitioned to a republic in 2008 after a decade-long civil conflict involving Maoist insurgents. Today it functions as a multiparty democracy under a 2015 constitution establishing a federal structure.

Agriculture remains the main livelihood for much of the population, though remittances from Nepalis working abroad and tourism are major contributors to GDP. Treks to Everest Base Camp, Annapurna, and Langtang attract adventure travelers, while spiritual and eco-tourism continue to grow. Nepal faces development challenges but maintains strong resilience and global cultural appeal.
