Taiwan is a mountainous island and self-governed territory in East Asia, located about 160 km (100 mi) off China’s southeastern coast. Officially administered by the Republic of China (ROC), it has developed into one of Asia’s most dynamic democracies and technology-driven economies. Taiwan is notable for its blend of traditional Chinese heritage, Indigenous cultures, and Japanese colonial influence, alongside cutting-edge industry and design.
Indigenous Austronesian peoples inhabited Taiwan for millennia before Dutch and Spanish colonies briefly appeared in the 1600s. After Qing-dynasty control and later Japanese rule (1895–1945), the Republic of China regained Taiwan at the end of World War II. Following the Chinese Civil War, the Nationalist government retreated to the island in 1949. Since the late 20th century, Taiwan has evolved into a vibrant democracy, while the People’s Republic of China continues to claim sovereignty over it under the one-China policy. The two sides maintain extensive economic links without a political settlement.
