Book A Trip

Timor-Leste, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, is a Southeast Asian nation occupying the eastern half of the island of Timor, along with nearby islands. It is one of the world’s youngest countries, having restored independence in 2002 after centuries of Portuguese rule and a period of Indonesian occupation.

Timor-Leste lies at the eastern end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, bordered by Indonesia to the west and the Timor Sea to the south. Its terrain is rugged and mountainous, with tropical forests and coral-rich coastlines. Agriculture, particularly coffee cultivation, dominates rural livelihoods, while offshore oil and gas fields provide major export revenue.

Formerly known as East Timor, the territory was colonized by Portugal in the 16th century. Following a brief independence in 1975, it was occupied by Indonesia until 1999, when a UN-sponsored referendum led to full independence under international supervision. The early years were marked by reconstruction and institution-building efforts supported by the United Nations.
