Lithuania is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. It is one of the three Baltic states, alongside Latvia and Estonia. Lithuania shares borders with Poland to the south, Belarus to the east and south, Latvia to the north, and a small border with the Russian exclave of Russia (Kaliningrad Oblast) to the southwest. It also has a coastline along the Baltic Sea. Lithuania covers about 65,300 square kilometers and has a population of roughly 2.8 million people.

The capital and largest city is Vilnius, located in the southeastern part of the country. Vilnius is known for its Baroque architecture, historic old town, and vibrant cultural life. Its Old Town is one of the largest surviving medieval old towns in Europe and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other important cities include Kaunas, a major cultural and academic center; Klaipėda, the country’s main seaport on the Baltic Sea; and Šiauliai, known for its industrial and regional importance.

Lithuania has a diverse landscape of forests, lakes, rivers, and plains. Around one-third of the country is covered in forests, and it contains thousands of lakes and wetlands that support rich biodiversity. The coastal region along the Baltic Sea is known for its sand dunes and seaside resorts. One of the most famous natural areas is the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its unique shifting dunes and natural beauty.

The official language is Lithuanian, one of the oldest living Indo-European languages and considered highly valuable for linguistic study because it preserves many ancient linguistic features. Most Lithuanians also speak English or Russian as second languages. The country has strong cultural traditions rooted in folk music, festivals, and seasonal celebrations.

Lithuania has a long and complex history. It became a powerful medieval state during the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which at its height was one of the largest countries in Europe, stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Later, it entered a union with Poland forming the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the most influential political entities in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries.

In the late 18th century, Lithuania was annexed by the Russian Empire. After the First World War, Lithuania declared independence in 1918, but it was later occupied during the Second World War by both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. It remained part of the Soviet Union until it restored independence in 1990, becoming the first Soviet republic to break away.

Today, Lithuania is a modern democratic republic with a rapidly developing economy. Key industries include manufacturing, biotechnology, information technology, and logistics. The country has become a growing technology hub in the Baltic region and is known for its startup ecosystem.

Lithuania is a member of the European Union, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the eurozone. It is recognized for its strong digital infrastructure, high education levels, and active participation in international organizations.

With its blend of ancient history, rich cultural identity, and modern innovation, Lithuania stands as one of the most dynamic and historically significant countries in Northern Europe.
