Book A Trip

Suriname is a small, ethnically diverse country on the northern coast of South America, bordered by Guyana, French Guiana, Brazil, and the Atlantic Ocean. Formerly known as Dutch Guiana, it gained independence from the Netherlands in 1975. Its economy centers on natural resources, and over 90% of its land remains covered by rainforest.

The population is among the most ethnically varied in the Americas, comprising Hindustani, Maroon, Creole, Javanese, Indigenous, Chinese, and European groups. Religious diversity includes Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. Dutch is the official language, though English and the creole Sranan Tongo are widely used. Cultural life blends South Asian, African, Indonesian, and European influences, visible in Paramaribo’s colonial architecture and in festivals such as Holi and Eid.
