Best European Destinations for a Romantic Getaway: Two Couples, Two Different Love Stories

Andrew and Lina live in Nairobi. Jim and Keisha live in Brazil.

They had never met each other, but they had something in common: both couples wanted to escape their normal routines and experience Europe together.

What they discovered was that there is no single “best” romantic destination in Europe. It depends on the kind of couple you are.

Andrew & Lina: Looking for the Classic European Romance

For Andrew and Lina, Europe had always meant Paris.

They imagined waking up without an alarm, finding a little café for breakfast and spending the afternoon walking through streets they had previously only seen in photographs.

Paris gave them exactly that.

But surprisingly, their favourite memories weren’t necessarily the famous attractions. It was walking beside the Seine in the evening, sharing dinner after a long day and simply having nowhere they needed to rush to.

From Paris, their European wish list grew.

Venice appealed to them for something quieter and more intimate. They imagined wandering through the narrow streets, crossing little bridges and taking a gondola ride before finding somewhere away from the crowds for dinner.

Then there was Prague.

Prague showed them that a romantic European holiday didn’t necessarily need a huge budget. With its old streets, Charles Bridge, castles and beautiful architecture, it offered the fairytale European atmosphere they wanted while potentially leaving more of their budget for food, experiences and a better hotel.

For Andrew and Lina, the lesson was simple: sometimes romance is less about luxury and more about having a beautiful place to explore together.

Jim & Keisha: Give Us Sunshine, Views and Somewhere to Relax

Jim and Keisha wanted something completely different.

Coming from Brazil, another busy city holiday wasn’t at the top of their list. Their idea of romance involved beautiful scenery, long dinners, incredible sunsets and plenty of time to do absolutely nothing.

That made Santorini difficult to ignore.

Imagine waking up in a whitewashed hillside hotel overlooking the Aegean Sea, spending the afternoon exploring the island and returning to your terrace to watch the sunset together.

That was much closer to Jim and Keisha’s idea of a getaway.

But then they discovered Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

Positano, Amalfi and Ravello offered something Santorini couldn’t quite replicate: the possibility of turning the holiday into an adventure. One day could mean exploring a coastal town, another a boat trip, and another simply sitting over a long Italian dinner overlooking the Mediterranean.

Their third choice surprised them: Lisbon.

Lisbon felt less like a honeymoon destination you had to carefully plan and more like somewhere you could simply arrive and enjoy. Colourful streets, viewpoints, cafés, great food and nearby coastal escapes made it attractive for a romantic trip without filling every hour with activities.

So, Which Couple Are You?

If you are more like Andrew and Lina and dream about beautiful streets, cafés, history and evenings walking through a European city, Paris, Venice or Prague might suit you.

If Jim and Keisha’s idea sounds more appealing—sunsets, ocean views, beautiful hotels and slow days together, consider Santorini or the Amalfi Coast.

And if you’re somewhere between both couples, Lisbon might be the answer.

The important thing is that romantic travel isn’t really about finding the destination everyone calls romantic.

It’s about finding somewhere that feels romantic to the two of you.

Years later, you might forget the museum you visited or exactly how much the hotel cost.

But you’ll probably remember that little restaurant you accidentally found, the sunset you watched together, the street you got lost on, and the person who was beside you when it happened.

And perhaps that’s what makes a romantic getaway romantic in the first place.
