What You Should Know Morocco can be visited throughout the year, but the experience can be very different depending on when you go. From the heat of Marrakech in summer to the chilly nights of the Sahara in winter, choosing the right season can make a big difference.
For most travellers, spring and autumn are the best times to visit Morocco because the weather is generally comfortable for sightseeing, outdoor activities and desert trips.
But what is it actually like? John's experience gives a better idea of what you can expect during different seasons. March to May: Comfortable and Easy to Explore Spring is one of the best periods to visit Morocco.
When John visited Morocco during spring, he found the weather comfortable enough to spend several hours exploring Marrakech without the intense heat experienced during summer. He spent his days walking through the medina, visiting markets, taking photographs and exploring historical attractions.
The afternoons were warmer, but the temperature was still manageable. John also enjoyed visiting the Atlas Mountains during this period because the cooler weather made the outdoor experience more comfortable. John's experience: Spring made it easier to explore Morocco without constantly worrying about the heat. Best for: First-time visitors, sightseeing, hiking, photography and exploring multiple cities. June to August: Be Prepared for the Heat Summer can be challenging, particularly in inland cities such as Marrakech.
John's experience during a summer visit was very different. The heat made afternoon sightseeing uncomfortable, especially when walking through busy areas with limited shade. He eventually adjusted his schedule by exploring early in the morning, taking a break during the hottest part of the afternoon and going out again in the evening. For John, this made the trip more manageable, but he felt that travellers who do not handle heat well should consider another season. The coast is different. Places such as Essaouira and Agadir tend to be more comfortable because of the Atlantic breeze.
John's experience: Summer was enjoyable, but he had to plan his days around the heat. Best for: Beach holidays, coastal destinations and travellers comfortable with hot weather. September to November: John's Favourite Period Autumn was John's favourite time to experience Morocco.
By September and October, the worst of the summer heat had started to ease, making it much easier to walk around Marrakech and explore outdoor attractions. John also found autumn ideal for visiting the Sahara. The daytime was warm enough to enjoy the desert, while the evenings were much more comfortable than during the hottest months. One thing that surprised him was how quickly the temperature changed after sunset. John recommends carrying a light jacket or warm layer if you are spending the night in the desert.
John's experience: Autumn offered the balance he wanted warm weather without the exhausting summer heat. Best for: First-time travellers, couples, desert trips, sightseeing and multi-city holidays. December to February: Cooler but Still Worth Visiting Winter offers a completely different Moroccan experience. John visited Marrakech during the cooler months and enjoyed being able to walk around the city without dealing with excessive heat. However, he noticed that mornings and evenings were considerably colder. His advice is to pack layers rather than assuming Morocco will be warm throughout the day. John also discovered that the Sahara can become surprisingly cold at night during winter. While the daytime was pleasant, the temperature dropped significantly after sunset.
The positive side is that winter is also a good period for activities such as surfing along the coast and skiing in the Atlas Mountains. John's experience: Winter was comfortable for sightseeing, but he wished he had packed warmer clothes for the evenings. Best for: City breaks, surfing, skiing and travellers who prefer cooler weather. John's Sahara Experience The Sahara was one of the highlights of John's trip, but he quickly realised that the desert requires careful planning. He recommends visiting during spring or autumn when temperatures are more comfortable.
One of the biggest surprises for John was the difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. The afternoon could be warm, but the desert became noticeably cooler after sunset. John also recommends allowing enough time for a Sahara trip. Travelling from Marrakech to the desert can involve a long journey, so trying to fit everything into a rushed schedule can make the experience tiring. What John Thinks About Marrakech For John, Marrakech was much easier to enjoy during the cooler months.
He spent hours walking through the medina, exploring souks, visiting attractions and trying Moroccan food. During the hotter months, he found that doing all of this in the afternoon was exhausting. His advice is simple: if Marrakech is your main destination, choose a period when the weather allows you to comfortably spend time outdoors.

Our Travel Advisery on Travel Center Global, If John's experience is anything to go by, spring and autumn are the safest choices for a first trip to Morocco. April, May, September and October offer a good balance between comfortable weather and outdoor activities. However, the best time ultimately depends on what you want from the trip. If you want Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara in one holiday, avoid the peak summer heat and consider travelling during spring or autumn. John's biggest lesson: Don't choose your travel dates based only on cheap flights. Think about the weather, the places you want to visit and the activities you want to enjoy before booking your trip.
